DO I HAVE CORONAVIRUS OR SOMETHING ELSE?

The coronavirus has infected over a 100,000 people worldwide, and is also colliding with allergy season. With all the health precautions and anxiety over the disease, it can be confusing to distinguish between symptoms of coronavirus, a common cold, seasonal allergies, or influenza. Unfortunately, the initial stages of colds, flus and the coronavirus can be very similar, and some coronavirus and flu cases can be so mild they don't raise any red flags.

Seasonal allergy sufferers don't react well to allergens like pollen, grass, and/or ragweed. Symptoms are usually mild and regularly occuring, such as the following:

  • Runny nose, stuffy nose, and/or sneezing

  • Wheezing or shortness of breath

  • Dry Cough

  • Rashes

  • Fatigue

  • Headache

The flu and the novel coronavirus tend to affect the entire body and affect other systems like the lower respiratory tract. Less common coronavirus symptoms include aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. The main three symptoms include:

  • Fever

  • Shortness of Breath

  • Dry Cough

*Note: If you have persistent pain or pressure in your chest, difficulty breathing, new confusion or inability to arouse, or bluish lips or face - consult your medical physician immediately.

Fever is the main difference between COVID-19 symptoms and seasonal allergies. Coronavirus causes a fever; allergies do not.

Additionally, if you have an acute case of coronavirus or flu, you will feel tired and achy. Allergies should not cause severe muscle or joint ache. Also, cold and mild flu symptoms usually resolve themselves, Coronavirus and acute flu symptoms could get worse over time.

Remember that just because it isn't the coronavirus, doesn't mean that it isn't serious. Last year, between 300,000 & 500,000 patients were hospitalized due to influenza, and about 30,000 of those died. The coronavirus may have a comparatively higher death rate, but the flu is more prevalent and far more likely to be a problem for the average person.
