DO I HAVE CORONAVIRUS OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE?

The coronavirus has infected over 6 million people worldwide and growing. With all the health precautions and anxiety over the deadly disease, it can be confusing to distinguish between common symptoms of coronavirus, a common cold, seasonal allergies, or influenza. Unfortunately, the initial stages of the common cold, cases of flu, and COVID-19 can be very similar - and individual coronavirus cases can be so mild that they don't raise any red flags.

Seasonal allergy sufferers have allergic reactions to allergens like pollen, grass, and/or ragweed. These symptoms are usually mild and regularly occurring, with ailments including:

  • Runny nose, stuffy nose, and/or sneezing

  • Wheezing or shortness of breath

  • Dry Cough

  • Rashes

  • Fatigue

  • Headache

In comparison, influenza and coronavirus tend to affect the entire body and other major organ systems like the lower respiratory tract. Less common coronavirus symptoms include aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, and/or diarrhea. The three main symptoms include:

  • Fever

  • Shortness of Breath

  • Dry Cough

Additionally, fever is the main differentiation between COVID-19 symptoms and seasonal allergies. Coronavirus causes fever in infected persons, but allergies do not.

If you have an acute case of coronavirus or the flu, you will feel tired and achy. Allergies, on the other hand, should not cause severe muscle or joint ache. Also, cold and mild flu symptoms usually resolve themselves, but coronavirus and acute flu symptoms tend to get worse over time.

Remember that just because it isn't coronavirus, that doesn't mean that it isn't serious. Last year, 300k-500k patients were hospitalized from the flu,

and about 30,000 of those died from the disease. While coronavirus may have a comparatively higher death rate, influenza is more prevalent and far more likely to be a problem for the average person.
