COVID-19 GUIDANCE FOR EMPLOYERS & BUSINESSES

The CDC recommends that large groups and gatherings of individuals of 50 or more people cancel or postpone in-person events for the next 8 weeks throughout the United States. To help prevent workplace exposure, the following are some suggestions from the CDC to businesses and employers:

  • Encourage sick employees to notify their supervisor and stay home if they are sick or have symptoms of COVID-19.

  • Ensure sick-leave policies are flexible and consistent with public health guidance, and employees are aware of these policies.

  • Send sick employees home immediately.

  • Do not require a healthcare provider’s note for employees who are sick with acute respiratory illness to validate their illness, as healthcare facilities may be busy and not able to provide documentation quickly.

  • Maintain flexible policies to permit employees to stay home and care for sick family members.

  • Emphasize respiratory etiquette and safe hand hygiene.

  • Provide tissues, soap and water, and alcohol-based hand rubs in the workplace. Instruct employees to clean their hands often.

  • Perform routine environmental cleaning and provide disposable wipes so commonly used surfaces can be wiped down by employees before use.

Businesses should also consider sharing what measures you are taking in the interest of your community’s health. Display your plan at your business location and/or on your marketing channels, website, and social.

Finally, check your insurance policy for coverage for communicable disease response. This coverage usually includes costs to clean up, remove and dispose of a communicable disease at your owned, leased or rented location, plus public relations expenses. Interruption by communicable disease provides time element coverage while you are shut down and as your business recovers.
